4 Essential Vastu Shastra Tips to Improve the Positive Energy of Your House

Hello, my name is Mahnoor, and I am an architect with a background in Vastu at Thiessen Cooper Architects. Are you planning to construct or renovate your house? Today I will discuss some amazing principles of Vastu for your home to improve its positive energy.

Vastu Shastra is a Sanskrit word where Vastu means “to dwell” and Shastra means “teachings”. I’ve been practicing this Indian form of architecture for 5 years.

Vastu Shastra guides construction design and the layout of homes to improve the health and fortune of the residents. Vastu also keeps a natural flow of Prana (vital force) flowing through the house, for its residents and surrounding community.

In this article, we will talk about the 4 Vastu Shastra tips that every person, who has or wants to build a home, can follow easily.

This topic was chosen carefully to make Vastu principles easily applicable and affordable by everyone, without having to invest in additional features.

1. Vastu for Main Door

Your main door is the entry point for energy to get inside. Vastu principles for this part of your home will be crucial for the overall health and prosperity of your family.

Direction

● The main entrance of your house must be on the north or east side of the block.
● It is better to have 2 gates, one in the north direction while the other in the east.
● Moreover, if due to any reason you are unable to build doors on the north or east side
you can also get them designed in the northeast, southwest, or northwest blocks.

Quality

The quality of the materials used in the main door matters a lot. Make sure to invest in high-quality wood for your door. The purpose of this is to make it the most appealing part of the house as it makes or breaks the impression on your guests.

Things to Avoid

According to Vastu Shastra, certain things bring negative energy in the house, hence one should avoid placing them outside the main entrance.

● A fountain or any water-centric decoration.
● Dustbin
● Shoe rack
● The bathroom near the entrance
● Using black color for the main door
● Sliding door
● Animal statues or figures

Things to do

● In order to make your home look inviting to your guests, decorate it with beautiful nameplates and decorative elements.
● Attach lighting fixtures to make your entrance well-lit so it looks bright and welcoming instead of dark and gloomy.
● Also, the biggest door in your home should be the main door because according to Vastu Shastra logic, it radiates positive energy. It also allows big  furniture pieces like beds to be brought in easily.

2. Vastu for Bedroom

As per Vastu, the architecture of a bedroom determines the mood, sleep, and relationship of the residents.

Direction

● The bedroom should be located in the southwest direction of the house.
● The northeast and southeast directions must be avoided.
● Place the bed in the southwest corner of the bedroom so that you face the west when you sleep. This is a way of removing unrest from your family  and improving sleep quality.

Things To Avoid

In order to keep your home free of fights and other domestic interruptions, try to avoid the following in your bedroom.

● Placing mirror, television, or computer in the bedroom. You shouldn’t see your reflection when you go to bed as it could result in quarrels between couples.
● Any plant or water-based decoration shouldn’t be placed inside the room.
Temples inside the room.
Windows behind your bed. Rather have them placed on the eastern or northern walls.
● Using single mattresses on double beds.

Things To Do

● Place your bed and cupboard southwest of the bedroom and ensure enough distance from the northeast wall.
● Use a neutral palette in your bedroom and utilize earthy tones for a natural and positive feel. Try using beige, whites, and greys instead of black.
● Also, use mood lighting and scented candles for a relaxed and serene atmosphere.
● Vastu home also stresses a lot on a clutter-free space. So make sure to use your space wisely and make full use of cupboards, hidden storage, and shelves.

3. Vastu for Living Room

This is the place where you and your family spend most of your time. Any guests who might visit will also form the biggest impression through it.

Where you want your living room to be cozy, you also want to showcase your sense of style through it. A Vastu-compliant living room will guide you on how to take both of these aspects hand in hand to improve the positive energy in your home.

Direction

● Plan your home in a way that the living room is in the east, north, or northeast of the house. If any of these are not possible, then you can also go for the northwest.
● Place any heavy furniture, like a couch, in the west or southwest of the living room.
● Use the southeast of your room for electronics and appliances.
● If you want to attach a mirror, then do so on the north wall.
● Nowadays, dining tends to be in the same space. If that’s the case then put the dining table in the east or south-east direction.
● If possible, build your kitchen close by for convenience.

Things to Avoid

To prevent an unhealthy home environment, be conscious of the things that might give rise to negative energy in your home.

Paintings or artworks that have a negative meaning like wars, people crying, sinking ships, etc can create negativity in your mind and can adversely affect your mood.
● Any form of broken glass, like a mirror and photo frame, maybe a sign of bad luck.
Objects that stop functioning, like clocks and electric appliances. They should be discarded as soon as they stop working.

Things To Do

● Colors play a big part in making a space feel positive. Go for lighter shades like white, beige, cream, and light pink. These will create a sense of happiness, calm, and warmth in your home.
● Choose contrasting elements as furnishings. These will complement the hues of the living room walls, creating an aesthetic and bright feel.
● Examples include choosing curtains or cushions from a vibrant palette, like gold, bright
pink, or turquoise.

4. Vastu for Kitchen

The kitchen is the place where you want to keep positive energy maximum. Vastu principles have an extensive guide to make that easier for us.

Direction

● According to Vastu, heat or fire sources should be in the southeast direction, so try building your kitchen to the southeast of the house.
● While cooking, it’s better to be facing the south. If that’s not easy, then facing west is an alternative too.
● Attach the sink in the northwest of the kitchen.
● West and South walls can be used for storage cabinets/shelves.
● Anything holding water, like water pots or pacifiers, is better if placed on the northeast side.

Things to Avoid

● A broken or leaking pipe indicates the drainage of wealth from one’s life so make sure to fix it or replace it as soon as possible.
● Don’t use old newspapers under storage jars.
● Avoid placing a dustbin on the northeast side.
● Try not to cook under an overhead beam.

Things To Do

● Create a clean and spacious kitchen by removing clutter.
● Build big windows for good ventilation and sunlight.
● Pick a simple kitchen design, that is minimal with clean lines and avoids a complicated design.
